'Let’s Cycle’ with trained volunteers from our community!
New Hope Global are pleased to announce that a further 3 of its volunteers have passed their qualification in First Aid training and group bike leaders’ course and are now qualified to led ride bikes. This is fantastic news, so far, we have trained 5 volunteers in partnership with Cycling UK #wearecyclinguk.
The course aims to give volunteers who are interested in delivering cycling sessions the confidence and skills to organise ‘Lets Learn to Cycle’ for beginners and ‘Lets Cycle for Social’ for confident riders.
Volunteers ride leaders are an essential role within the Cycling community, enabling riders to enjoy social rides and teaching others to learn how to ride a bike without the worry of finding a good route allowing them to concentrate on spending quality time with other beneficiaries, reduce health inequalities within BAME communities and improve individual’s physical and mental health and wellbeing.
The three women who have passed their first Aid are Afsana, Shamima and Kulsuma. Women who have passed the bike leaders course are Afsana, Kulsuma and Fateha. All four women are from inner city areas of Birmingham and have never been on a bike since their early childhood due to stigmas attached and barriers faced. They started their journey in May 2022 on the ‘Lets Learn to Cycle’ sessions, they quickly went onto progress onto the social rider’s session and once they gained their confidence, these women expressed an interested to train as ride leaders.
New Hope Global are ecstatic with the achievements of all our volunteers and like to congratulate them all. Well done!
A huge Thank you to Cycling UK and Canal and River Trust.

I was so nervous at the thought of riding a bike, but it was on my bucket list, and I was determined to learn to ride. When I came across New Hope Global’s cycling project I plucked up the courage and booked my space. I’m so glad I did because now I love cycling and I’m getting more confident each week. Thank you, New Hope.

For me cycling was good, it gave me confidence and motivated me. I have a problem with the right side of my body and have lost 20% strength. Cycling encouraged me to move and keep active, by doing this I regained strength, and it improved my health. I rode a bike as a child but not in my adulthood, so it was a good opportunity.
