raising diabetes awareness

A vital step towards healthier lives

Diabetes is a prevalent and chronic health condition that affects thousands of people in Birmingham, in partnership with Birmingham City Council we have taken a vital step towards raising awareness of Diabetes amongst the Pakistani Community.   The Pakistani community in Birmingham represent the 2nd largest ethnic group living in the city. Birmingham Public Health recognises the importance in addressing the unfair and preventable health inequalities that the Pakistani communities face within Birmingham.

Understanding Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or fails to produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels. Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy and can increase the risk of complications for both the mother and the baby.

Raising awareness about diabetes is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, increased awareness can lead to early detection and diagnosis, allowing individuals to access appropriate medical care and management strategies promptly. Secondly, raising public awareness helps combat misconceptions and stigma surrounding the condition, fostering a more supportive and inclusive environment for those living with diabetes. Finally, by informing our communities about the risk factors and preventive measures associated with diabetes, we can empower individuals to make healthier lifestyle choices and reduce their overall risk of developing the disease.
